Welcome to the DPA

The Dental Practitioners Association advises, supports and represents dentists in the UK. Membership is restricted to dentists in general practice (not academic, armed forces, clinical or community dentists). It is the largest such organisation representing over 2,500 dentists in the UK. You're Welcome

The principle executive committee of the Association is the Council. On Council you have a real chance to set the agenda for dental policy in the UK and to meet with the Department of Health and other national bodies. If you want to be involved in the future of the dental profession at top level and can commit to three Saturday meetings a year—we would like to hear from you.

We are looking for dentists who:

  • Are working (or worked) wholly or mainly in general practise (NHS or private).

  • Own a computer with an Internet link and have a reasonable level of IT skills (training can be given).

  • Are able to attend the DPA for three Saturday meetings a year.

We are actively seeking women dentists who wish to correct their under representation within the profession at top level.

Council members usually volunteer for a variety of work in their particular area of interest, which hopefully keeps them stimulated between meetings. The Association has a salaried Chief Executive Officer and permanent office staff. Travel and subsistence are reimbursed for all Council meetings.

Make a Difference

The work of the Council requires members to attend three meetings a year - one that coincides with the Annual General Meeting and two near our office in Harley Street in London. One of these is usually in the autumn, when our evidence to the Review Body on Dentists Pay is agreed and the third is in early February.

Elections

Every three years (last held in 2008), elections are held for membership of the DPA Council as well as for the Chairman, Secretary and other Officers of the Association. To retain our strong historical link to general dental practice, our constitution dictates that every member of our principle executive committee must be registered (or entitled to be registered) as a dentist in general practice.

Even between elections, there may be members who are contemplating retirement and this presents a great opportunity for enthusiastic GDPs to put themselves forward for co-option to Council and to be involved with the running of the Association and help shape new ideas for the development of the profession.

If you would like further information about this opportunity to make a real difference to your profession ring 0207 636 1072. We look forward to welcoming you as the newest member of the DPA Council.
